Homeowners: Find out Which Property Tax Exemptions Automatically Renew this Year
If a homeowner received any of these five exemptions last year (tax year 2020), they do not need to reapply this year (tax year 2021).
To verify which exemptions were received last year, homeowners can visit the Cook County Property Tax Portal at cookcountypropertyinfo.com, enter their PIN and look under the exemption tab.
The automatic renewal of exemptions comes from the passing of SB 685, which was signed by
Governor J.B. Pritzker and passed by the Illinois General Assembly.
“This legislation will be a huge convenience to seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. It will ease the administrative process many homeowner exemptions,” said Assessor Kaegi. “This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many of these individuals may be at high- risk for the virus.”
Homeowners will receive a postcard or letter in March 2022 confirming which exemptions will be automatically renewed.
For first time applicants, the 2021 tax year exemption filing period will begin in early March 2022. Homeowners are encouraged to file online. To learm more about property tax exemptions and eligibility, please visit cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions.
